We provide several options to configure the security of the connection between our server and your e-mail client. Choosing the right option is important to ensure that your e-mails and credentials remain protected.
Below is a detailed explanation of each option:
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
When SSL is used, the entire connection between your e-mail client and the server is fully encrypted. This means that any data sent or received, including your e-mails, attachments, and login credentials, is protected from interception by third parties.
SSL is widely supported and is generally considered the most secure option for e-mail communication.
STARTTLS (often listed as "TLS" in e-mail clients)
With STARTTLS, the connection initially starts as an unencrypted connection, but it is then upgraded to a secure, encrypted connection. This ensures that your data is protected during transmission. STARTTLS is commonly used and is compatible with many e-mail clients and servers.
Plain / No security:
If you select a plain, unencrypted connection, your e-mails and login information are transmitted in clear text. This means that anyone with access to the network, such as on a home network or public Wi-Fi, could potentially read your messages or steal your credentials.
This option is strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary in a controlled environment.
